If you are looking for a Christian charity that will put your donations to use while bringing Christ into people’s lives, look no further. Below are four excellent Christian charities that are worthy of your consideration and kindness:
Our Calling
OurCalling is a faith-based organization based in Dallas, Texas, that helps the homeless live a healthy and sustainable lifestyle. Its mission is to help homeless individuals develop a love for Christ by building long-term, heart-to-heart relationships. These relationships provide the accountability and encouragement necessary for life change and reinvestment in their lives.
The approach used by OurCalling is to help people discover the reasons for their condition and the emotional and material resources to live beyond their challenges. The volunteers are motivated by the love of Christ to search the city for those in need and offer them true friendship and meaningful support. They strive to build long-term relationships with people living on the street and guide them to a relationship with Jesus Christ that will help them to realize their worth and inspire them to invest in their lives.
OurCalling accepts donations of cash, food, and clothing. Every donation is used for OurCalling’s mission of evangelism and discipleship among the poorest members of the community. It buys food, water, shoes, hygiene items, and gasoline for the organization’s vans, which are crucial to their search and rescue operation. It also helps to pay for a part-time employee who helps with the operations. OurCalling is accredited by the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), a watchdog organization dedicated to helping Christian ministries earn the public’s trust.
Edify
The mission of Edify is to improve and expand sustainable Christ-centered education globally. Edify accomplishes this in a number of ways. It trains school leaders and teachers to provide a biblically-based, high-quality education and develop Christ-like character in students. Their staff stands alongside school leaders and teaches them necessary skills that will help them manage efficient and sustainable schools.
Edify also offers school owners access to lending capital so they can improve and expand their facilities. These improvements allow schools to reach more students in safer and healthier learning environments. Edify provides schools with access to education technology for the classroom, specifically focusing on tools for literacy and critical thinking skills, allowing them to graduate with increased likelihood of meaningful employment.
Edify works in ten different underserved countries around the world. It reports that more than one million students have been provided with high-quality education, nearly 14,000 teachers have received training, and more than 3,600 schools have been strengthened with the resources needed for success. Edify’s audited annual reports are posted online for complete transparency.
Mercy Ships
Mercy Ships operates a hospital ship that provides free lifesaving surgeries for people where medical care is nearly non-existent. The Africa Mercy brings volunteer medical teams and sterile operating rooms directly to people who would otherwise go without care. It is the world’s largest civilian hospital ship providing state-of-the-art care to those in desperate need—free of charge. More than 82,000 surgeries have been performed onboard their ships since 1978. They have removed tumors, given sight to the blind, corrected clefts, fixed fractures, and much more.
For every dollar donated to Mercy Ships, 75¢ goes straight to the ships and field operations to provide surgeries and world-class medical care to those who have no other hope. Just 25¢ is set aside for overhead expenses and general costs. Plus, every dollar they receive multiplies in value, thanks to the support of many generous corporate sponsors. You can find annual audited financial statements for Mercy Ships posted on its website.
Mercy Ships is a member of the ECFA which provides accreditation to Christian nonprofit organizations that faithfully demonstrate compliance with established standards for financial accountability, fundraising and board governance.
The Last Well
The mission of The Last Well is to provide access to safe-drinking water for the entire nation of Liberia, border to border, and offer the gospel to every community they serve by the year 2020. Over the past 10 years, The Last Well has faced the water crisis in Liberia head-on, reaching over 2,000,000 Liberians with water and the Gospel through over 8,000 safe-drinking water projects. Their success has left less than 1 million Liberians who need to be reached spread through 4,000 communities by 2020.
No less than 100% of The Last Well’s operational costs are covered by a small group of donors, so that every dollar you give goes directly to programs in the field providing the Gospel & clean water in Liberia. The Last Well is accredited by the ECFA and other watchdog associations.
